Burlington Post-Burlington Appeals To Province

The city is asking the province to step in.

On Oct. 17, Our Ward 6 Councillor Angelo Bentivegna put forth a petition with roughly 1,500 signatures requesting the Ontario minister of municipal affairs and housing prevent a proposed housing development on what is currently Burlington’s Millcroft Golf Course.

“I want to make sure we send a clear message to the province,” said Bentivegna.

The developer, Argo Development Corporation, has proposed 90 single-detached dwellings and one six-storey residential apartment in the area. The proposal has been strongly opposed by residents of the area.

Burlington council has also publicly opposed the development. The dispute is currently before the Ontario Land Tribunal.

Mayor Marianne Meed Ward said the province has the power to declare the matter as one of provincial interest and stop the development.

“Once it’s developed it’s done we don’t get that green space back into the community. And even though it’s a golf course today, it doesn’t mean it will be a golf course forever, but it needs to remain a green space,” said Meed Ward.

Opponents of the development have argued the area is an important green space that supports stormwater mitigation in the area. They also claim it is home to many local species.
