Ducks sighting at the Turnberry Pond

Who doesn’t love ducks? Head to almost any water habitat and you are likely to see at least a few swimming around. We found these at the Turnberry pond during our Nature walk!

Did you know?

-Ducks assist in Pest control. They have an insatiable appetite for bugs and grubs making them a great choice for pest control and invasive species in our ecosystem.

-Waterfowl help biodiversity with wetland to wetland delivery. Dispersal by waterbirds can help a species shift its range. As conditions get warmer, waterfowl can help other species expand northward to climates where they can continue to be successful. It also helps keep a species’ gene pool diverse, making it easier for the species to avoid inbreeding and adapt to changing environments.

- Ducks and other species work together! Canada geese are notorious for protecting their nests and goslings during the breeding season. This aggression can benefit other birds nesting nearby, keeping predators—and people—at a safe distance, which helps survival of young birds regardless of their species.

Its not just our neighbourhood that’s at stake, its their's too!
